Week 16 VANCOUVER ISLAND
31/8/22 - 6/9/22
Lucy and Shane had to return home and so we were alone again after more than 3 weeks.
We set out to explore Vancouver Island. It was about an hour and a half by ferry from the port in Powell River. They had a game room on the ship, and Charlinka immediately found a friend there. Thanks to this, the trip flew by quickly and before we knew it, they were calling us back to the cars.
After shopping in Courtenay we headed south along the coast.
Our aim was Rathtrevor Beach Campground despite the fact that we did not have a reservation. The risk didn't pay off this time, they were full. After a while of searching, we found a campsite in Qualicum Beach, but we had to back track for half an hour.
Poor Benji had already enough of driving for the day. It's not easy to drive the caravan in city traffic, turning around and parking.
In the morning we set out for the crossing towards Tofino. Our hope was to stop for the night somewhere halfway at Sprout Lake. However all the campsites were full, so we had no choice but to go all the way to the west coast.
The booking we made in Tofino was for two nights starting Saturday, so on Friday we parked for the night at the Lost Shoe Campground near Ucuelet.
On Saturday we arrived in Tofino much earlier than we had planned. The kids playground had everything Charlie could've dreamt of and more, so she was happy to "wait around" for the camp to check us in.
Surf grove campsite was definitely the most expensive place to park a car we saw on our travels.
The campsite was beautiful and new, right on the beach and we had water and electricity at our site, but $160 a night is quite steep.
Benji rented a surfboard and enjoyed the perfect waves, I managed a 5km run and Charlie was at the playground more than in the camp that weekend.
We enjoyed our weekend in Tofino despite the high prices and headed back to the east coast of the island on Monday.
On the way, we stopped to get gas in the town of Ucuelet. Right by the gas station there was a sign "Smoked salmon, locally caught fish - 400m".
While Benji was refueling, Charlinka and I went shopping. In addition to smoked salmon, we also bought halibut steaks. We'll have a feast!
We chose a place by the river for the midday nap. While Charlie slept and I journaled, Benji went fishing. Half an hour later he brought a trout! Finally a catch!
For the night I booked a campsite in Port Alberni.
We just needed a transfer station and they advertised a mini farm and a playground on their website. Little did we know that the campsite sat on the banks of the best salmon river in the area. And it was salmon season!
The river was full of fishermen hauling in one catch after another, the water was teeming with salmon, and a black bear was watching from the opposite bank to clean up the scraps.
Benji excitedly ran to the car to get his rod to try to catch a salmon too. But he was unlucky all afternoon. We still had fish for dinner. Halibut bought in the morning and for dessert the trout!
The next morning I suggested that we extend by one night and go into town for a proper rod. Hunter Benji was happy, he doesn't get an opportunity like this every day.
Before lunch he was back in the water and before Charlie woke from her nap he managed to catch two giant salmon!
He was taken in by professional fisherman who come here every year for the salmon season. They showed him how to prepare the rod properly and set him up in the best spot. What great guys!
In the morning, Benji caught a third salmon, but gave it to the elderly guy from the neighbouring site. It made him very happy, and honestly me too. There was no room in the fridge for the third fish!
