We left Coffs and made our way towards Sydney. Our first stop was Port Stephens. We were all looking forward to visit the Johnsons'. Scotty is Benji's best friend so we try to see them, even if only for a little while. I always enjoy chatting with his wife Karley, and Charlinka had been looking forward to seeing Arlo for weeks. He is nearly one year older, so Charlie looks up to him as the faster, bigger and stronger one.
The children played, the adults chatted, and our visit went by too quickly.
Our tour de friends continued in Sydney. We came to Dane and Ava just in time for Charlies nap. Their son Willem was already asleep, so I put Charlie to sleep too. She woke up in the morning with a bit of a cold, so she passed out quite quickly and without protest.
An hour later she woke up with a terrible cough. It sounded different, so barky, and she couldn't catch a breath properly. Since we had to fly the next day, we didn't want to leave anything to chance, and quickly took her to the respiratory clinic. The doctor's verdict was croup. He put her on two doses of steroids and told us to come back the next morning before the flight.
So that Charlie wouldn't infect Will, we played it safe and booked a hotel near the clinic and just meet them for a walk and dinner.
We checked out in the morning, went to the clinic, returned the rental car and before lunch we were at the airport.
I was so nervous that morning. Last time I felt like this was perhaps the day of my law school finals. I couldn't stop thinking about all the what ifs. What if she gets another coughing fit, 14 hours on a plane is such a long time!
The flight was OK in the end, although it was full and we didn't get much sleep. Charlinka barely coughed and slept half of the flight. Phew, what a relief when we landed.
We had a hotel booked right at the airport for one night. We napped for a while right after lunch and went to bed at about 10. But Charlie woke up at 11 and couldn't sleep for the next 3 hours. The jet lag is hard even for a healthy adult, a sick toddler had no chance.
An uber came to pick us up on Friday morning. Charlinka and I took all our luggage to the mall and waited and waited. Dad went to buy a car in the meantime.
Yesterday in the middle of the night, Charlie and I came up with a name Fredie.
In two hours, Benji arrived, they transferred the papers, paid the purchase price and secured the insurance. In another 2 hours we were already sitting in our new house on wheels.
It's a 1992 Ford (Benji's year) and the interior matches it, but it has low mileage and runs nice. Let's hope it doesn't fall apart for the next two months!
That afternoon we rocked up to Lucy's and Shane's in a pretty miserable state. Charlie had a fever, a cough and her nose was running non stop. Benji had a cough and I had a stuffy nose. Dream guests!
The next four days were difficult. I'll try to describe it in points and give something that was good for each negative memory. Because when times are hard, it's sometimes easy to forget the positive moments.
Charlie received the test result from Sydney - Covid negative but Respiratory virus positive. We didn't need a test for that, the kid is a walking cold right now.
One afternoon we saw a bear with three cubs in the woods near the house.
Neither the air conditioning nor the refrigerator work in the car. The sellers claimed it was working. We didn't check it. Lesson learned.
Slow food cycle - Lu and Shane got us bikes and a seat for Charlie. Farmers, brewers and various other vendors set up stands along the road and the cyclists rode, feasted, rode, feasted, rode... Almost everyone in the area participated, over 3000 people, and they didn't count the children!
Benji called about 15 repair shops in the area to no avail. Either they don't do air conditioners and refrigerators, or the waiting period is over 3 weeks. And it's 35 degrees here every day!!! I don't know what we'll do with that hot tin!
We went for a quick swim in Gates Lake. The nature here is incredible. It looks like a postcard around every corner.
We had to take Charlinka to the emergency room one evening. The croup came back again and she had a pretty scary coughing fit in the middle of the night, she couldn't even catch her breath properly. They gave her more steroids and we got a bill for 1150 CAD!!! Hopefully the insurance company will give us something back.
The next evening we had to take her to the ER again. She had another fit, and I couldn't take it anymore. I just wanted to sit outside the emergency room with her overnight, just in case. We have a house on wheels, so why not! In the end we had to go inside with her. After the steroids, they also gave her nebuliser. It's a positive memory, because the doctor forgave us the fee this time and Charlinka slept the whole night! I also felt a lot calmer.
Hopefully she'll start getting better soon!
