Week 6 RUNNING WEST
22/6/22 - 28/6/22
It was time to admit that we desperately missed the ocean. We are used to being in the water sometimes even several times a day, and the land of crocodiles simply does not suit us.
Since we needed to buy some travel necessities for the van, we set the first target fairly close.
Berry Springs is another famous hot spring, and it's only about a 45 minute drive to Darwin.
Tumbling waters campsite has been our favorite so far. They had a wonderful restaurant with great food and a great atmosphere, two pools, a turtle pond and even an outdoor movie theater. Every night before the movie they played a documentary about a band. The first one was Coldplay and the next day they played the Rolling Stones. Charlie liked the bands more than the fairy tales we play her sometimes! She's a musical child!
Before leaving the northern NT for good, we managed a half day trip to Darwin. They had a wave pool by the beach. It was a hot day and so the pool was full of people. Well, what can you do when there are crocodiles in the ocean. We also joined in. They had a full crate of floats and body boards for kids to borrow. One was with Bluey, which is Charlies favourite at the moment, so the child was happy.
Benji missed salt water and he happily accepted this salty substitute of the ocean, so the husband was happy too. And that's a success, if you ask me!
After two days in Berry Springs and an obnoxious amount of money left in stores, we hit the road for the long trip. We had almost 2000 km to go and the plan was to stop for a few days once we reach Broome.
For three days and three nights we drove most of the day and slept different place each time.
First stop was the caravan park at Timber Creek. A river flowed through the park in which crocodiles were casually floating. But only the small, freshwater ones. The trees above the river were full of bats and it was interesting to watch them interact and hug each other.
The next day we stopped to see the huge Lake Argyle. There was also a caravan park, but it was so packed that we decided to go find accommodation on our own. About 500m from the highway, we found a patch at the foot of the hills that met all the requirements for an overnight stay. We made pizza for dinner and a nice campfire and watched the stars.
On the last night we found a great spot camping on a cliff. Although there were toilets and benches to sit on, it was free! At sunset we walked along the ridge of the rock we camped on and had a delicious grilled pumpkin, quinoa and tofu for dinner. Yum!
The morning was insanely windy, and as we had an ambitious plan to drive all the way to Broome, we set off right after breakfast.
On the way we tried to book accommodation in Broome. All the campsites and caravan parks were hopelessly full and the hotels started at $400 a night. But I want to wash my hair!
The new plan was to pay at a campsite along the way for a shower and to top-up our water and then drive to a free campsite by the Fitzroy River near the town of Derby.
Getting there was quite interesting. One had to open a gate that had "Private Property" written on it and drive down a dirt road through a cattle pen. After 10 km, another gate and that's where the riverside camp was. Of course, there were crocodiles in the river, but there were also supposed to be plenty of fish, so we tried fishing for the first time.
Neither of us had the slightest idea how to do it. In the two days we were there, we didn't catch anything! Not even with the live bait that Benji got from a grandpa from the caravan next door to us.
Oh well, we ran out of food and water and the fish were biting, just not for us. We finally made our way to Broome. Hopefully we can find some last minute accommodation!
